Key Political and Governmental Strategist Richard Gordon Joins IGA as Distinguished Fellow
New Brunswick, NJ – The Institute of Global Affairs (IGA) is pleased to announce that Richard S. Gordon, a respected figure in national Democratic politics, will join the institute as a Distinguished Fellow.
“We are very pleased that Richard Gordon is joining us,” said Edmund Janniger, President and Chairman of the IGA. “With over three decades of experience at the pinnacle of government, public policy and the law, Mr. Gordon will be a pivotal voice in shaping how we perceive complex political and policy matters.”
Mr. Gordon has served as a senior advisor to presidential candidates, members of the United States Cabinet, attorneys general, comptrollers, treasurers and mayors on a myriad of complex political and policy matters. Mr. Gordon is the founder and president of the Gordon Law Firm. Previously, Mr. Gordon was a partner at McKenna Long & Aldridge, an international law firm. He was part of the firm’s Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs practice.
Mr. Gordon served as the senior advisor to Senator Evan Bayh’s presidential campaign, and was part of Vice President Walter Mondale’s presidential campaign staff. He is a member of the chairman’s board and the Governor’s Advisory Council of the Democratic Governors Association, a position he has retained since the board’s inception. He is also a member of the Republican Governors Association’s National Finance Committee.
Elected in 2007, Mr. Gordon served as the President of the American Jewish Congress. In May 2008, President George W. Bush appointed Mr. Gordon to serve on the Honorary Delegation to accompany the President to Jerusalem for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel. After serving five years as president, Mr. Gordon was elected Chair in 2012.
He has been a counselor to numerous governors across the nation on major infrastructure, economic and privatization issues. Mr. Gordon was the Director of Policy and Planning for Governor Evan Bayh of Indiana, a position he held for five years. He was the architect of the Governor's major policy initiatives, and directed the Governor's efforts during his chairmanship of the Democratic Governors Association.
Mr. Gordon was the National Finance Chair for the Evan Bayh for Senate campaign and the Washington Transition Director for Senator-Elect Bayh. His extensive curriculum vitae also includes service as Indiana's Deputy Commissioner of Environmental Management, Executive Director of the Friends of Mario M. Cuomo, senior advisor to the All-American PAC, and a Clinton/Gore member of the Democratic Platform Committee.
Mr. Gordon received his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Rochester, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
